Materials Used in Plastic Injection Molding

1. Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (ABS)

ABS is a durable and impact-resistant plastic commonly used in automotive parts, consumer electronics housings, and toys. It offers excellent dimensional stability and surface finish, making it ideal for aesthetically sensitive applications.

2. Polypropylene (PP)

Lightweight and chemically resistant, polypropylene is widely used in packaging, medical devices, and household goods. Its fatigue resistance (the “living hinge” property) makes it ideal for containers, caps, and flexible lids.

3. Polycarbonate (PC)

Known for its high impact strength and optical clarity, polycarbonate is often used in safety equipment, lighting lenses, and electronic components. It’s heat-resistant and provides good dimensional control during molding.

4. Polyethylene (PE)

One of the most commonly produced plastics, polyethylene is used in a range of applications from bottles and containers to piping and films. It’s moisture- and chemical-resistant, available in both high-density (HDPE) and low-density (LDPE) grades.

5. High Impact Polystyrene (HIPS)

HIPS is a tough, economical plastic known for its ease of processing and excellent dimensional stability. Commonly used in packaging, point-of-purchase displays, and appliance housings, it’s valued for its glossy finish and printability.

6. Nylon (Polyamide – PA6, PA66)

Nylon provides high mechanical strength, wear resistance, and thermal tolerance. It's frequently used in gears, bearings, and automotive under-the-hood parts requiring long-term durability.

7. Polyoxymethylene (POM or Acetal)

Acetal delivers excellent stiffness, low friction, and dimensional stability. It’s ideal for precision parts like gears, fasteners, and structural components that need high wear resistance.

8. Thermoplastic Elastomers (TPE/TPU)

Flexible and rubber-like, TPEs are used for grips, seals, and wearable components. They provide comfort, shock absorption, and resistance to environmental stress.
